What is Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)?
Blepharoplasty is the clinical name for upper or lower eyelid surgery, which may be performed for functional or aesthetic improvement of the eyes. Eyes a prominent part of the face and their appearance can impact the overall facial profile. Tired or old looking eyes can make a person look older.
In some cases, the eyelids may be droopy, which can cause vision obstruction, apart from the aesthetic concerns. All such issues can be corrected with blepharoplasty. As an experienced oculoplastic surgeon in Palm Springs, Palm Desert and surrounding communities, Dr. Hui is able to provide advanced and effective surgical solutions such blepharoplasty to patients in the region.
Upper Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid skin may lose its natural elasticity as the muscles weaken and the eyelid tissue stretches due to aging or other factors. As a result, the eyelids can start appearing puffy, giving a tired or angry look to the eyes. An eyelid lift procedure such as upper eyelid blepharoplasty can be performed on an outpatient basis to address these issues. The surgery can help restore a more youthful and rested appearance to the eyes.
In some cases, ptosis or droopy condition of upper eyelids may occur along with loose eyelid skin. This may cause the eyes to appear partially closed even when the patient is awake. The oculoplastic surgeon will examine the eyes to determine if there is a condition of underlying ptosis. This condition must be addressed together with upper eyelid surgery, so that the tired look from the lids can be removed.
In case of the upper eyelid blepharoplasty, the surgeon will make an incision along the contour of the eyelid crease to keep it inconspicuous. Through the incision, the surgeon will remove the excess skin to make the upper eyelids smoother. The incisions will finally be closed with fine sutures.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
In some cases, weakened eyelid muscles and loose tissue can make the lower eyelids appear tired and puffy. The eyelid skin can get a rough or wrinkled appearance. This condition can be improved with the help of lower eyelid blepharoplasty. In this procedure, the surgeon will make an incision either on the skin or on the inside of the eyelid to remove the excess skin. The goal is to eliminate puffy bags under the eyes. Incisions are marked just below the eyelid margin to hide any scarring.
Following the surgery, the patient will have to use apply ice packs for a few days to allow the swelling to subside quickly. Most patients can go back to work within a week to 10 days. Sun protection for the eyes is recommended for a period of at least three months following the surgery.
