What should you expect after revision eyelid surgery?

What should you expect after revision eyelid surgery? | Palm SpringsRevision eyelid surgery is a relatively less invasive cosmetic surgery, which involves minimal risks of post-operative complications in the hands of a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon.

However, the patient will need to follow specific instructions during the recovery period after revision eyelid surgery.

Vital Information

The surgeon’s guidelines will enable the patient to experience a comfortable and safe recovery phase. The surgeon will offer the patient details on various aspects of revision eyelid surgery and the recovery process associated with it during the pre-operative consultation.

Oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Jennifer Hui provides revision eyelid surgery to patients in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Coachella Valley, Riverside, Redlands, Yucaipa, Loma Linda, and surrounding communities.

Recovery Phase

The surgeon will generally undertake revision eyelid surgery on an outpatient basis. But, in exceptional cases, the patient may need to stay overnight at the hospital.

The appropriate approach to the post-op recovery period will be determined by the surgeon after assessing the unique needs of the patient. Most patients will need to recover at home for nearly a week after the surgery.

A majority of patients can return to work or resume normal activities after a week. However, it can take many weeks for complete healing to take place after revision eyelid surgery. In case the surgeon has used traditional sutures, they will remove these after the first week.

The patient should allow sufficient rest to the eyes during the recovery period. The inflammation and redness will be more pronounced during the initial week, but will slowly resolve.

The eyes may experience exertion due to reading, watching TV, or working on a computer in the early recovery period. Initially, patients must avoid exertion as it increases the blood flow to the eyes leading to delays in recovery.

Once the inflammation and bruising resolve, the patient will see a rejuvenated and more youthful upper face appearance.

The eyes will appear rested and alert as the final results of the surgery manifest. If the patient has been experiencing partial vision obstruction due to droopy upper lids, this condition will be corrected.

Temporary Side Effects

A common side effect of the revision eyelid surgery is inflammation and redness in the region around the incisions. The patient may experience dryness, itching, and soreness in these areas and the eyes may tear excessively.

The surgeon may prescribe pain drugs and a topical cream to enable the patient to remain comfortable while these temporary after-effects resolve.

Some patients may experience light sensitivity or blurred vision. These side-effects will resolve faster if the patient follows the surgeon’s post-operative instructions properly.

Aftercare

The patient can use cold compresses on the eyes during the initial two or three days after the eyelid surgery, which will enable the inflammation to subside.

If the patient experiences dry eyes, the surgeon may also prescribe eye drops to them. During the initial few weeks after the revision eyelid surgery, the patient will need to protect their eyes from sun and wind exposure.
