Your Lower Eyelid Surgery Consultation

Once a person has decided to undergo lower eyelid cosmetic surgery, as a first step, they should schedule a consultation with the surgeon of their choice. The consultation process will be comprehensive, and the patient should participate proactively to help the surgeon create a customized surgical plan.

Dr. Jennifer Hui is a dedicated oculoplastic surgeon providing lower eyelid surgery and other innovative and advanced cosmetic procedures to patients in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Coachella Valley, Riverside, Redlands, Yucaipa, Loma Linda, and surrounding communities. Dr. Hui will have a detailed consultation in order to pave the way for a successful lower eyelid surgery.

Establishing Surgical Goals

At the time of initial consultation for lower eyelid surgery, the surgeon will educate the patient about the procedure and discuss various treatment approaches and techniques. The benefits and limitations of various techniques and the estimated costs of the procedure will also be discussed. The surgeon will encourage the patient to ask questions and clarify all their doubts and concerns about the procedure and the surgeon’s practice.

The patient should share their innate aesthetic needs and desires and explain to the surgeon what about their eye appearance may be bothering them. The surgeon will incorporate this feedback to create a customized lower eyelid surgery plan, which may sometimes include additional procedures such as upper eyelid lift or brow lift.

Health Assessment

The eye surgeon will review the patient’s medical history to determine their fitness for lower eyelid surgery. An evaluation of the eye anatomy, skin type, and elasticity, and any eye infections will also be carried out. The patient should inform the surgeon about the current medications and herbal supplements, smoking, alcohol, and past eye procedures, including LASIK.

Sometimes the surgeon may order additional diagnostic tests or seek medical clearance from the patient’s general physician. Dedicated oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Hui receives patients from Palm Springs, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Coachella Valley, Riverside, Redlands, Yucaipa, Loma Linda, and nearby areas for lower eyelid surgery.

Guidelines

The surgeon will provide certain guidelines to the patient for the preparation and post-surgical recovery. If the patient is a smoker, they will be required to quit smoking for a certain period of time prior to the lower eyelid surgery. Their schedule of prescription meds may have to be altered, and blood thinning medications and herbal supplements may have to be completed stopped for some time.

The surgeon will guide the patient to arrange for someone responsible to drive them back home after the surgery. Working people may have to apply for leave in advance because they will be required to rest at home in the first week after the procedure. The patient may also arrange for aftercare for the first two to three days or more after the surgery.

Developing Expectations

During the consultation, the surgeon may encourage the patient to review lower eyelid surgery before and after images of past patients. This will help the patient to be clear about what to expect and what not to expect from the procedure, and make a well-informed decision.
