In the unfortunate event of trauma or eyelid cancer, eyelid reconstruction may be necessary to maintain eyelid function and preserve vision while achieving an aesthetically natural appearance. Eyelid reconstruction, although not as involved as for cancer or trauma, can also come into play with conditions such as droopy eyelids or entropion/ectropion.
What is Eyelid Reconstruction?
If you suffer from an eyelid abnormality, including growths on the eyelids, there’s good news. There are a number of effective oculoplastic procedures designed to restore the eyelid to its original appearance and function.
Eyelid reconstruction surgery is an effective means for treating a number of eyelid related issues including:
- Ptosis – drooping / sagging of the eyelids
- Thyroid eye disease
- Eyelid growths, including skin cancer
- Trauma to the eyelids and eye socket
- Entropion – Inward-turning of the eyelid
- Ectropion – loose eyelids that turn out
- Eyelid Malposition
- Eyelid retraction
- Orbital Fractures
- Damage to tear drainage system
Post-Mohs Surgery Eyelid Reconstruction
Mohs surgery is one of the most effective treatments to remove basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and other types of skin cancer. During Mohs surgery, thin layers of cancer-containing skin are progressively removed and examined until only cancer-free tissue remains.
However, when Mohs surgery is performed to remove a tumor from the eyelid, a reconstructive eyelid surgery procedure will be required following the surgery to restore your eye to its natural beauty and function.
